Neck Pain

Relieving And Preventing Neck Pain

Neck pain comes from a variety of physical stress to the muscles and bones in the neck area that causes discomfort. Physical impact to the neck area, a tumor in the neck, execessive computer work and sleeping in an unwise position can all contribute to neck discomfort, as well as anxiety and other emotional stress.

Many people having problems with neck pain report that their head feels heavier than it should, adding to the discomfort and irritation that comes from the pain.

Some easy tips can help people deal with neck pain on their own, minimizing the need for the use of pain medications. One of those tips is to maintain an active lifestyle. The temptation often is to stay in bed and not to move at all, but in the long run, staying active helps drain stress from the body while naturally keeping stiffness out of the joints and muscles.

The state of mind is also important when dealing with pain in the neck. Discomfort usually lasts only about a week after being triggered, so people who keep in mind that it is a temporary condition that usually is not a symptom of a worse underlying condition can usually avoid unnecessary panic while dealing with the problem.

Those who have prolonged or chronic neck pain should see a doctor, chiropractor or other health professional to get their condition checked.

Some neck movements while sitting upright with eyes forward can help relieve stress in the neck that is causing pain. For example, tilting the head an inch or two to the right and then to the left followed by stretching in down until the chin touches the chest and holding for a few moments are all movements that many people find beneficial.

Applying heat or ice for a quarter hour at a time to the painful area of the neck can also provide needed relief. Also, some anti-inflammatory drugs can help provide relief from the discomfort of neck pain.

Other things that can be done to minimize neck pain is to lift objects properly and avoid moving the neck too much. Also, by keeping the arms below the head, the chance of aggravating neck pain is minimized.

While seated, people should keep their eyes aligned with the top of their monitor to keep the head pointed slightly downward. Legs should never be crossed with feet flat on the floor. Also, computer workers should never have to reach for their keyboards, meaning that they should always be close to the body.

Follow these pointers to minimize problems with neck pain and to improve the quality of daily life.
