Cancer Pain

Cancer is a large class of diseases where the cells in the body show an uncontrolled growth along with taking over and destroying nearby tissue. There are many different kinds of cancer, and each of these cancers can manifest in different ways. There are two main types of cancer though. There is the kind that comes about from an environmental cause and then there is the kind of cancer that is hereditary. As far as pain management and treating the disease, the ways are similar for each different kind of cancer.

The symptoms to cancer can vary greatly with the different kinds of cancer, which is one reason that it’s a good idea to get a physical every year to make sure that everything is well in your body. With most kinds of cancer, the diagnosis can be confirmed with radiology tests and microscopic examination of a biopsy of the cancer cells. Many forms of cancer are treatable but there is a rising rate of cancer deaths throughout the world. In the year 2007, it has been reported that 13% of deaths in the world were caused from cancer.

The treatment methods for cancer can be different depending on the type of cancer that is being dealt with. With many cancer treatments, chemotherapy and radiation are used. With both of these types of treatment, it involves kills or changing the cancerous cells in the body to rid it of the cancer. Many times the treatment itself with cancer can cause considerable pain, which leads to needing good pain management.

Pain relief for cancer pain can be achieved by different kinds of medicines. If the pain is mild, usually aspirin would be sufficient to treat it. With medium pain, your doctor might prescribe a stronger medicine like codeine or oxycodone. For severe pain, the medicine is usually the same as medium pain, but at higher doses.

Having cancer can be scary and painful, but in most cases it is treatable. The pain can be managed by your doctor to give you a decent life while in treatment for your cancer.
